Stefan Tooke is a silversmith and spoonsmith based in Sheffield, England.

His interest in spoons and silverware developed whilst studying Metalwork and Jewellery at Sheffield Hallam University. After graduating in 2007 I got some work experience at David Mellor’s Round Building, then he started his business in 2008. The aim of his work is to strike a balance between function and aesthetic.

Clementine

With this set of spoons Stefan Tooke’s objective was to challenge the formal qualities of a traditional teaspoon, by introducing colour and changing the usual proportions of the teaspoon. The colour and form of carnelian stones reminded him of Clementine segments and this directed the development of the designs.

Having started with an almost traditional long shank teaspoon, using a process of quick sketches and forging test pieces, Stefan developed the forms of the next two pieces. The length of the shank was altered in progression, and the size of the bowl increased. The shank was divided into two then three, to increase the number of carnelian stones or Clementine segments within the design. The carnelians at the end of the shanks change the dynamic of the visual experience of the pieces, creating a strong counterbalance to the increasing scale of the press-formed bowls soldered onto the forged shanks.
