Website

Jane Short is an enameller specialising in individual pieces of enamelled silverware. Using the traditional techniques of champlevé and basse-taille, her work is a rich and evocative exploration of colour and imagery.

Many of Jane’s pieces are commissioned to mark or celebrate a special occasion, from wedding anniversaries to the marking of the Millennium. Items include boxes, bowls, decorative plates and chargers, tableware, and, in conjunction with the silversmith Clive Burr, clocks. Jane also makes items of enamelled jewellery such as brooches, earrings and pendants.

A Winter’s Walk on the Downs

Inspired by observations of colour, pattern and texture in the landscape, this is a response by Jane Short to a walk on the South Downs, sticky chalky ploughed fields, bright winter sunlight.

The surface of the metal has been engraved with lines, and given a texture using a small chainsaw, blocked up into a dish shape, and enamelled in a painterly way, using gold foils and precious metal
leaf to add depth and richness to the colour.
